Organisations like ours need volunteers. They are our lifeblood and without them we couldn’t function, so we decided to instigate regular sessions to ensure our volunteers have their say, exchange ideas and share news first hand.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and we’re delighted to say that we have a fantastic mix of ages, faiths, and life experiences that come together into a blend of highly motivated and committed women, all doing what they can to help Invisible Traffick grow, and combat the horrendous effects of human trafficking on its victims.
At the first of our Volunteers’ Workshops, held in January, we asked attendees to tell us what motivated them to sign up as a volunteer. Here are some of their responses.
“I first started volunteering because I wanted to help the founders and I believed it was such a good cause. I have found working in the house really rewarding.”
“My sister-in-law was badly abused and now has multiple personality disorder, and has to be looked after by family. I wanted to help because I understand the terrible long term effects of this kind of abuse.”
“I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, and to see someone develop and learn to overcome their difficulties. What I’ve discovered is how mutually rewarding the work has been. “
“I feel very passionately about empowerment, and the strength we can give to other women; using the skills we have and passing them on to the women we work with. I also enjoy being in a team all working together to make a better future for them. I want to make a difference and be part of this group and great cause.”
“I wanted to help women who feel they have no worth, to help them develop self-worth again, and my main influence was to show them that they need to care for themselves in all areas of their life, and use my skills and knowledge in nutrition to inform them how important diet is to their wellbeing.”
“What spurred me on to volunteering was the realisation of how lucky I was. I have a good home, plenty of money, and don’t have any real problems. It’s such a worthwhile cause, and even when I don’t feel like doing my shift, I inevitably feel so much better.”
“I believe the work we do is transformative, it really does bring about change, and that’s something we can all feel proud of.”
Thank you to everyone for your feedback, commitment and unstinting energy.
